Spandau Citadel is a Renaissance fortress built between 1559 and 1594 by Italian architects Francesco Chiaramella de Gandino and Rochus zu Lynar, its four bastions ringed by water where the Havel meets the Spree. It stands on a medieval site: the 13th-century Julius Tower and 15th-century Palas survive from the earlier castle, with traces of a Slavic settlement dated to around 1050. It opened as a museum in 1989.
