What it’s like to ride

The Kanarieberg climbs the south flank of the Muziekberg out of Ronse, a kilometre of smooth asphalt in good condition, with the Lorette chapel standing at the foot. The road is not especially wide and runs almost straight, so the gradient does the work rather than the corners: it averages somewhere near 8% and touches 14% at its worst. Open fields on the edge of town stay with you for most of it, and then the trees of the Muziekbos close in and the road steepens again in the last stretch, exactly where you want it to relent. The top arrives at a T-junction, and a left turn there takes you into the woodland of the Muziekbos itself.

History

The Kanarieberg entered the Ronde van Vlaanderen for the first time in 2014, slotted into the roadbook immediately before the second ascent of the Oude Kwaremont, and was climbed nine times in the race between 2014 and 2023. It has been a regular in Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne as well, and has appeared in the Driedaagse van De Panne, E3 Harelbeke, Halle-Ingooigem and the Eneco Tour. Dwars door Vlaanderen dropped the hill from its 2025 route on safety grounds, together with the fast descent leading into it, after the 2024 edition saw a high-speed crash on that run-in that broke Wout van Aert's collarbone and ended his classics campaign.
