Commandobunker Kemmel
Historic site · Heuvelland · Flanders
Checked
In the flank of the Kemmelberg, Flanders' highest hill, lies a 20-meter-deep Cold War command bunker built by the Belgian army between 1951 and 1953 as an air-defense coordination center. From 1965 the Belgian Armed Forces used it as a headquarters for a possible Soviet attack. Open as a museum since 2009, its corridors and control rooms can be visited today.
Two floors sit under two-meter-thick walls in a complex spanning just over 2,000 square meters, topped by a floating concrete roof up to 2.9 meters thick and engineered to absorb a bombing impact rather than simply resist it. The original air-defense role never actually materialized: by the time construction finished, NATO had built its own separate air-defense network, leaving the bunker technologically obsolete and too costly to retrofit against nuclear, biological or chemical attack. The Belgian army repurposed it anyway, running the post around the clock with 600 personnel working rotating shifts through Cold War exercises that simulated a Soviet invasion, until it closed in mid-1995. Since 2017 it has been run by the War Heritage Institute, which built its visit around school groups and Cold War education.
What you see
An ordinary brick house facade on the hillside conceals the stairway down into the bunker, giving no hint from outside of the complex beneath it.
Practical
The bunker can be visited either with a guide or independently.
