Bazylika Katedralna Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny i św. Mikołaja

The building started as a wooden church around 1100, was rebuilt in Gothic brick, and became a collegiate church in 1433 under the archbishops of Gniezno who made Łowicz their seat. A fire in 1525 forced a rebuild, and further construction through the 17th century turned the church into the Baroque basilica standing today, its interior stucco frieze and cartouches the work of Jan Chrzciciel Falconi. Among the tombstones and epitaph plaques lining the aisles, Primate Jakub Uchański's grave stands out, carved in 1580-1583 by Jan Michałowicz of Urzędów. The church took heavy damage in the 1939 Battle of the Bzura and was restored after the war. Pope John Paul II created the Diocese of Łowicz in 1992, raising the church to cathedral rank, and came back in person in 1999 to name it a minor basilica.
