Zamek Królewski w Piotrkowie Trybunalskim

Castle · Piotrków Trybunalski · Łódź

Checked

This royal castle was built in 1512-1519 for King Zygmunt I the Old by master Benedykt of Sandomierz, combining Gothic foundations with Renaissance windows and portals. It served as a royal residence until the end of Zygmunt Augustus's reign, and after 1578 it hosted the newly established Crown Tribunal. Today it houses the Museum in Piotrków Trybunalski, with over 17,000 exhibits across four departments.

Piotrków hosted the first bicameral Polish sejm in 1493, with a separate senate and chamber of deputies, making the town one of the cradles of Polish parliamentary government. Stefan Batory founded the Crown Tribunal here in 1578, and for 214 years, until 1792, the country's highest court convened in the castle every six months. Prisoners held during its sessions scratched inscriptions into the walls, some dated as early as 1565. Swedish troops badly damaged the building during the wars of the 17th century, and a rebuild around 1670 replaced the Renaissance portals with Baroque ones and changed the roof from a two-slope to a four-slope design. A city fire in 1865 and a later Russian military occupation added more damage before the castle reopened as a regional museum in October 1922.
