Kościół św. Katarzyny Aleksandryjskiej

Historic church · Zgierz · Łódź

Checked

This neo-Gothic parish church rose on Zgierz's Wzgórze Wiary hill between 1910 and 1924, its construction interrupted by the First World War and finished only after nearly two decades of work. Designed by Łódź architect Stefan Lemeńe in a Vistula-Baltic Gothic style, it was consecrated in 1930 and carries a 60-metre tower, the tallest landmark on the town's skyline. German occupiers closed it as a military warehouse in 1939.

The parish here dates to 1215, one of the oldest in the region, and the neo-Gothic building standing today is the fourth church raised on this hill since 1231. Stefan Lemeńe, the same architect who designed Łódź's Savoy Hotel, once the city's tallest building, and the former headquarters of the tsarist mounted police, gave the church its brick form of two naves, five altars, and vaults rising 20.4 metres. A three-manual organ with 40 stops fills the space. The tower underwent a major renovation in 2013, eight decades after the original consecration.

What you see

Lit at night since 2000, the tower stays visible above the Bzura valley long after dark.

Practical

Climbing the tower's viewing terrace, opened in 2018 about 30 metres up, means calling the parish first (42 716 33 18); steep wooden stairs give way to easier metal ones partway up.
