Kościół św. Doroty

Church · Łódź · Łódź

Checked

First recorded in 1415-1418, this wooden church in Mileszki stood among the oldest in the Łódź area until a fire destroyed it on 31 August 2015. Its reconstruction faithfully follows the 18th-century structure, built from prefabricated timber elements crafted by highland carpenters from Podhale and assembled on site.

The church that burned in 2015 was already a patchwork of centuries: a building from 1543 stood on the site until a 1766 fire damaged its roof and furnishings, prompting repairs the same year, and it grew a timber-framed front section with a four-metre porch in 1832, then a taller tower in 1881. Before the fire, the interior held three late-Renaissance altars from the early 17th century, Gothic sculptures dating to the 15th century, Baroque paintings, a late Baroque pulpit, and an eight-voice organ, all lost. Investigators traced the August 2015 fire, which broke out around 4 a.m. on the 31st, to a fault in the electrical installation. Reconstruction began in autumn 2021 with support from the City of Łódź and the metropolitan archbishop, and the rebuilt church was completed on 22 July 2025, nearly a decade after the fire.
