Local landowner Samuel Żeleński raised the first wooden chapel on the site in 1676, and pilgrims came in such numbers that a permanent stone church replaced it, built between 1701 and 1723 and consecrated in 1726 by the Archbishop of Gniezno. A brick monastery followed, finished in 1748 and paid for by pilgrim donations. Franciscans have run the sanctuary since the 17th century, and the original wooden chapel from 1676 still stands about 800 metres away inside the forest. The parish itself was only formally established in 1902, though people had already been coming to pray here for over two centuries by then.
