Kościół pw. Świętego Idziego

Historic church · Inowłódz · Łódź

Checked

Built from sandstone around 1086, this Romanesque church is the oldest structure in the Łódź region and among the oldest in Poland. Duke Władysław Herman founded it as a votive offering after the birth of his son, the future King Bolesław Krzywousty. Its round west tower and semicircular east apse remain largely unchanged, while a Benedictine convent that once stood alongside it was destroyed by Tatar raiders in 1241.

The church stands on a hill above the point where old routes between Masovia and Lesser Poland crossed the Pilica, a position that made it useful as a lookout and shelter as much as a place of worship. The earliest surviving document naming it, dated 1145, later turned out to be a 13th-century monastic forgery rather than a contemporary record. A Benedictine convent of nuns stood on the same hill until Tatar raiders destroyed it in 1241, killing or scattering the sisters. In 1520 the growing parish moved to the new St. Michael's church in town, leaving St. Giles a secondary chapel, and Prussian occupiers later converted it into a military storehouse in 1793, though not before townspeople rescued its venerated image of Our Lady of Sorrows.

What you see

A conical red roof crowns the round west tower, giving the church a small castle's silhouette on its hill above the Pilica, its thick sandstone walls pierced only by small round windows that doubled as gun loops in times of raid.
