Historic church · Łódź · Łódź
Checked
This neo-Gothic church on the Old Town Square was built in 1888-1897, replacing an earlier St. Joseph's church that moved to Ogrodowa Street. Its parish is the oldest in Łódź, tracing back to the city's medieval settlement. The twin-towered building holds stained glass windows, Tyrolean wood-carved Stations of the Cross, and a stone tombstone from 1822, the oldest in Łódź.
Warsaw architect Konstanty Wojciechowski designed the new brick church in the Vistula-Baltic style, echoing the brick Gothic tradition of the Baltic coast, unusual for central Poland. Bishop Kazimierz Ruszkiewicz of Warsaw consecrated the finished building on 5 June 1897. The parish itself dates to 1430, founded by the Gniezno archbishop Jarosław Bogoria Skotnicki. Inside, a 37-voice organ built in Vienna and installed in 1892 stands in a Gothic-framed case above the choir.
