Zamek w Piotrkowie Trybunalskim-Bykach

Castle · Piotrków Trybunalski · Łódź

Checked

This late-Gothic castle was built in the 15th or 16th century by the Jaxa-Bykowski family, then remodeled into a Renaissance palace around 1604 under voivode Jan Stanisław Bykowski. It fell into decay in the 18th century, was rebuilt after the Jeziorański family bought it in 1847, and lost part of its tower to World War II damage. Restored in 1959-1964, it has housed an Agricultural Advisory Center since 1980.

The site held a fortified manor built around a rectangular tower, with a 28-metre residential wing added to the south in the late 16th century and an octagonal tower raised to the north in the 17th or 18th century, its three small apses either genuine gun positions or built merely to look like them. Voivode Jan Stanisław Bykowski carried out the 1604 Renaissance remodel together with his wife, Petronela z Małachowic Małachowska, castellanina of Łęczyca. A separate tower chapel on the south side was pulled down after the Second World War and has since been rebuilt. Ownership passed from the Bykowski family through the Skórzewski and Maliński families before the Węzyk family bought it in 1760 and let it slide into decay.
