Zamek Arcybiskupów Gnieźnieńskich - hotel i centrum konferencyjne
Castle · Uniejów · Łódź
Checked
Built in 1360-1365 for Archbishop Jarosław Bogoria Skotnicki on the site of a stronghold destroyed by the Teutonic Knights, this castle served for centuries as a residence of the Archbishops of Gniezno. A fire in 1525 led to its rebuilding as a Renaissance residence, and it survived the near-total wartime destruction of Uniejów around it. Today it operates as a hotel and conference center.
Ownership passed to the Toll family, Baltic-German nobility, when the Tsarist government granted the estate to General Aleksander Toll in 1836; he rebuilt the castle in the Classical style in 1848 and laid out the park around it, planting tree species that still grow alongside its protected old oaks and beeches. Local legend tells of a woman known as the White Lady who led a band of robbers into the Warta marshes and drowned there with them. In its centuries as an archbishops' seat, the castle also served as an archive holding Gniezno Cathedral's treasury and manuscripts whenever the cathedral itself was under threat. It now runs on geothermal water piped from the same source that feeds Uniejow's adjacent thermal baths, one of only a few castles in Europe heated this way.
What you see
The castle's stone tower rises directly above the Warta river, and a marble statue of the White Lady stands among centuries-old oaks in the park behind it.
Practical
The tower is open to visitors as a viewing platform over the Warta river and the town.
