The Andechs pilgrimage church crowns the Holy Mountain above the Ammersee at roughly 700 meters, its onion dome visible for miles. Built in the 1420s and reworked in Rococo style by Johann Baptist Zimmermann, it houses a relic treasure unearthed in 1388 and has drawn pilgrims since the 12th century, making it Bavaria's oldest pilgrimage site. The adjoining Benedictine monastery has brewed beer since 1455.
