This earthwork above the Isar started as a late Roman watch station guarding the Via Julia crossing between Augsburg and Salzburg; a gold solidus of Emperor Magnentius and dozens of late-Roman coins have turned up in the ramparts. In the 10th century a massive earthen wall and outer ditch were added, built during the era of the Hungarian invasions. Finds from the site are displayed at the Burgmuseum Grünwald.
