Cycling stops in Munich

Munich's riding points south. The Isar leaves the city on its own path and keeps going toward the mountains, and within an hour the ground starts to fold: Starnberger See and Ammersee first, then the moraine hills, then the Alps themselves standing across the horizon on a clear day.

It is one of the few big cities where a rider can be in genuine foothills before lunch and back for dinner.

Schloss Planegg

Munich

Schloss Planegg has belonged to the same family, the von Hirschs, since Jakob von Hirsch bought it in 1815. Its baroque form dates to 1737, over a fortified core first built in the 1410s. On Kristallnacht in November 1938, SS men set fire to the castle of its Jewish owner while firefighters were held off at gunpoint.
