88 years of isolationFor 88 years, keepers could only reach the lighthouse by boat, and only in calm weather. From the rocks they climbed 272 steps cut into the cliff, rising 300 metres. Every week they carried up 17 kg of oil and food this way.
The engineer's roadAntonio Parietti cut this road into the sea cliffs in 1925, on a ledge carved from the rock. He placed each bend where the cliffs break the wind. He later carved Sa Calobra's hairpins too.
PracticalCars are banned on the road 15 May-18 October, 10:00-22:00; cyclists, hikers and the TIB 334 bus ride straight through.
