Sa Ruta Verda
Café · Mallorca
Checked
One of Mallorca's original cycling cafes, sat right where the road to Coll de sa Batalla and Sa Calobra begins to climb. Owner Lennart Bjolgerud rebuilt a Caimari ruin from scratch, opening in 2015: real coffee, homemade energy bars, vegan and gluten-free food, a jersey rack and tools to borrow for the climb ahead.
Owner Lennart Bjolgerud walked away from a career as a London banker in the early 2010s, and a mountaineering expedition in central Asia afterward left him wanting something organic and built around bikes rather than boardrooms. He bought the derelict building in Caimari, the village he had already adopted as home, and rebuilt it himself in 2014, adding an apartment above the cafe. Lennart and his team are as well known for local route advice as for the coffee, easy to draw into a conversation about which climb to tackle next. Ulrich, a sparrow rescued as a chick, has stuck around ever since as the place's unofficial mascot. Word has spread well beyond the island: reviewers repeatedly call it the go-to cycling stop in Mallorca, and it draws a steady mix of touring cyclists and training-camp regulars through spring and autumn.
