Passo Manghen

Pass · 2047 m · Dolomites

Checked

Commercial traffic is banned from this road, and the ramps out of Valsugana touch 16%. Above the treeline the upper hairpins fold into an amphitheatre of bare rock at 2,047 m, ringed by the peaks of the Lagorai.

The Giro discovered the climb in 1976, when Luciano Conati soloed to the biggest win of his career on the stage from Vigo di Fassa to Terme di Comano. Emanuele Sella built the decisive move of the day here in 2008, attacking almost 50 kilometres from the finish on his way to victory at Alpe di Pampeago. The Giro has returned six times in total since 1976, most recently in 2019. It remains one of the few paved roads across the Lagorai chain, rarely busy even at the height of summer.

What you see

Above the treeline the road's upper hairpins fold into a natural amphitheatre of bare rock, ringed by the peaks of the Lagorai chain.

Practical

Commercial traffic is banned on the pass road. From Molina di Fiemme the climb stays gentle for the first eight kilometres to Ponte delle Stue, then turns hard, with the final six kilometres averaging ten percent to the summit.
