Climb the short lane up its basalt hill and the pointy-domed silhouette of Humprecht comes into view above Sobotka, the tower is worth the extra pedal strokes for a panoramic sweep over the sandstone hills of Cesky raj. Built 1666-1668 as a summer hunting lodge for Humprecht Jan Cernin, an imperial ambassador to Venice, it was designed by the Italian architect Carlo Lurago in a mannerist style blending late-Renaissance and early-Baroque forms. Its rare elliptical floor plan centers on a 16-meter-high oval banquet hall famous for its acoustics, its ceiling frescoed with scenes from Cernin's life beneath the family's coat of arms. After an 1678 fire, builder Francesco Ceresola rebuilt the castle and added a story; the elliptical cupola got its golden crescent in 1829. Now a national cultural monument (since 2008) with 27 rooms and a small museum, it underwent major reconstruction in 2021-2023.
