Muzeum Českého krasu v Berouně
Beroun · Czechia
Riders passing through Beroun's main square, Husovo náměstí, go right past this museum's home in the Jenštejnský dům, and can step inside for the geology and fossils of the Bohemian Karst hills they've just been riding through. The institution traces back to 1888, when it was founded as a public museum and library for the people of Beroun; it then moved through a new schoolhouse, the old Pražská brána town gate, the town hall, and the Duslova villa (1924–25) before finally settling into the Jenštejnský dům in 1968. Its collections span ethnography, local cultural history, geology, paleontology and zoology, plus a speleology section on the karst's caves. A standout piece is a set of nine Baroque paintings of saints and Benedictine order figures by painter Jan Václav Spitzer. A severe 2002 flood left nearly two metres of water in the basement, prompting the museum to open its outdoor Geopark Barrandien geological exhibition in 2003. It also administers the nearby Plzeňská brána gate and runs branch museums in Žebrák and Hořovice.
