Včera

Vcera is the first Alzheimer-friendly cafe in the Czech Republic, opened by the nonprofit organization Dementia to give people with dementia and their families a place to meet, while the cafe's takings help fund a support center for them. The name means yesterday in Czech: short-term memory is the first thing the disease takes, and the cafe was named for what a person with dementia can still recall. Under the model, one caregiver staffs the counter while others in the group get a rare stretch of free time, and the space also runs workshops on dementia care. Horovice was chosen deliberately, because the town had no such support service before. The whole menu is gluten-free: sweet and savory waffles, toasts, cakes and tortes made to order, ice cream, and specialty coffee roasted by Co-bean. The cafe is open to the public.
